Multispecies justice redesigns justice away from the fiction of individualist primacy, toward an ecological reality where humans actually exist: in a larger set of material relationships. Multispecies justice is a new, generative concept that refers to the recognition of injustice caused to non-human species as a result of anthropocentric environmental decision-making processes (Jack). Multi-species justice ensures that all interests are not only acknowledged, but adequately represented. The 'Lovecene' is an aspirational planetary-order shaped by multispecies (human and non-human) equality and justice that transcends the anthropocentricism of current periodizations of planetary-level social and economic change.
Environmental Justice in multispecies worlds: Land, Water, Food March 6-8, 2020 University of Wisconsin–Madison 2020-10-07 A multispecies justice lens expands climate justice by decentering the human and by recognizing the everyday interactions that bind individuals and societies to networks of close and distant others, including other people and more‐than‐human beings. Our Multispecies justice collective hosts a range of activities, from reading groups, to symposia and international events, as well as collaborations with artists and policy makers. While students will be working within a particularly disciplinary area, they will be engaging across a range of disciplines and thus be able to experience interdisciplinary research and methodologies. Through collaboration, shared imagining and interdisciplinary, multispecies conversations, the Multispecies Justice collective has worked to produce scholarship that penetrates and transforms the three areas of research (human rights, environmental studies, human-animal studies) and scholarship in various disciplines, at the same time as defining a new field.
